Kenneth R. Herr, MD Technological Advances The Practice has gained recognition and distinction over the past 22 years for providing services utilizing the latest technological advances in obstetrics and gynecological care. Most recently, Bedford Commons OB-GYN became the first and only private practice in New Hampshire to offer the Ultrascreen Risk Assessment screening for first trimester obstetrical patients. This highly specialized test screens for Down syndrome and Trisomy 18 between 10 and 14 weeks gestation. The test involves an ultrasound (performed on-site) and two blood samples. The Practice is certified by the Fetal Medicine Foundation to perform this specialized screening exam. Surgical Techniques At Bedford Commons OB-GYN, patients are also taking advantage of two developments in minimally invasive surgical techniques that allow the surgeon to view internal organs and structures utilizing a hysteroscope or laparoscope. Hysteroscopes and special ultrasound techniques are used to detect polyps, fibroids or other pathologies, and can be used as a guide for a procedure known as endometrial ablation. This procedure has been very effective for many women in providing relief from excessive uterine bleeding after childbearing is completed. The use of endometrial ablations has reduced the need for hysterectomies performed for bleeding by approximately 70%. The laparoscope can be used for diagnostic purposes and treatment of conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, and for performing minimally invasive hysterectomies. Urogynecological Approaches Another significant area of medical advancement available at Bedford Commons OB-GYN involves the evaluation and treatment for urinary incontinence. The physicians can perform specialized urodynamic testing on-site to determine the most appropriate treatment for each patient. In many cases, physical therapy and medications are the primary cornerstones of care. A thorough evaluation may determine that the patient will benefit from surgical correction. A procedure, known as Tension Free Vaginal Tape, is now available and is being performed by the physicians at Bedford Commons OB-GYN. The procedure is done with two small incisions that significantly reduce the recovery time after surgery compared to other urogynecological approaches. Following this procedure, patients are frequently released to go home the same day and may return to work a few days later, with the same results that major surgery provided in the past. Preventive and Complementary Women's Health Services Other preventative services available at Bedford Commons OB-GYN include bone density screening for osteoporosis, psychological counseling and wellness-oriented programs. The providers of the Practice offer many educational programs to the community. Pregnancy and childbirth classes are available as well as monthly seminars on topics of interest. Previous seminars have included Preparing for Pregnancy, Hormone Replacement Therapy, and Understanding Diets from Atkins to the Zone. Comprehensive

on-site at Bedford Commons. Cosmetic laser skin care treatments
using IPL intense pulsed light and lasers include removal of spider
veins, permanent hair reduction and photorejuvenation to treat
skin damage. Since state-of-the-art laser machines are used to
beam light onto the skin, the treatments are non-invasive and safe
for sensitive skin. Now it is possible to repair sun damage, broken
capillaries, skin discoloration, age spots, lines and wrinkles
simply. The wavelength of the laser light from the machine causes
an attraction to various pigments within the skin. By focusing
the beams of light on specific areas of the skin, the different
machines can effectively remove spider veins and dark hair from
face, legs, backs, underarms and bikini areas.
