Changes to OB billing starting in 2027
There are some important changes happening in 2027 that will affect how your maternity services will be billed.
What is Changing? Beginning January 1, 2027, new national maternity billing guidelines will change how pregnancy-related services are submitted to insurance companies. Currently, maternity care is typically billed as one “global” package that includes: Prenatal visits, delivery care and postpartum care. Starting in 2027, these services will instead be billed separately throughout your pregnancy.
What is NOT Changing? Your medical care is not changing. You will continue to receive the same care, providers, services and support from our practice. These updates only affect how claims are processed and billed through your insurance company.
Important Information for Patients Receiving Care in 2026. There are no changes to maternity billing for care provided through December 31,2026. Routine obstetrical care provided in 2026 will continue to be billed under the current global maternity billing structure. This means prenatal care, delivery (in 2026), and postpartum care are generally combined into one inclusive maternity charge that is submitted to your insurance at the time of delivery. Depending on your delivery date and insurance processing timelines, you may see charges submitted near the end of 2026 or after January 1,2027 for services received during your pregnancy.
Beginning January 1, 2027. Maternity services will transition to a more itemized billing structure. You will begin seeing separate claims for prenatal visits, separate bills for delivery and postpartum care and more frequent insurance Explanation of Benefits (EOBs). This does not necessarily mean your total cost will increase. Your financial responsibility will still depend on your individual insurance plan, deductible and copay/co-insurance amounts.
All deliveries are performed at Elliot Hospital. The hospital will bill your insurance separately for all facility-related charges, including inpatient room and board, hospital-based diagnostic services, medications administered in the hospital and anesthesia services.
